Elefsina
Greece

Eleusis: The place where Attica, from antiquity, drew knowledge and prosperity.
One of the most important religious centres of the ancient world, the site of the enactment of the Eleusinian Mysteries. The most fertile plain of ancient Attica where, according to the traditional myth of Demeter, agriculture first developed. In modern times a center of heavy industry, the productive steam engine of Greece.
A city of 30,000 inhabitants which produced 30% of the Greek GNP, leaving behind, however, regrettable evidence of the harsh exploitation of the local environment.
Today, in the post-industrial age, and on the occasion of Eleusis having been chosen as European Capital of Culture 2021, Eleusis is undergoing a great revival and transformation. The city is eager to present its new contemporary identity to a wider audience.
ECOC
Eleusis, as Europe in miniature, brings together the challenges faced by human beings today, namely, the challenges of recovering a harmonious relation with nature – Mother Earth, Demeter – and the necessity of extending our relations with the Other within multicultural societies and covering the needs of sustainability.
Our central mission is for Eleusis to become paradigmatic of a new model, whereby the arts give new breath to the city by functioning as an outlet for creative expression, while at the same time giving Eleusis a chance to develop into a modern cultural centre that meets the highest international standards.

In November 2016, the Greek city of Eleusis has been designated the title of European Capital of Culture 2021.
Eleusis 2021 European Capital of Culture is a municipal S.A. responsible for the implementation of the ECoC project.
The central idea of the Eleusis 2021 cultural programme is expressed by the moto “Transition to EUphoria”. The proposal of Eleusis focuses on the question of sustainable development at social, environmental and economic/labour level: Eleusis becomes a laboratory to rethink the content and meaning of sustainable development.
