The history of Chemnitz tells a unique story – of groundbreaking inventions in automotive engineering, mechanical engineering, and the textile industry.
The city and its people have a recipe for success – following one’s own path, daring to try new things, and being a living embodiment of the spirit of invention. Chemnitz has seen the invention of the thermos flask and the first mild detergent, two patented ideas amongst thousands more. Today, high-quality machinery and production systems are manufactured here.
Tradition and modernity are also reflected in architecturally exciting contrasts. Architecture lovers can delight in unique witnesses to the Bauhaus school and the New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit) movement as well as the Kaßberg, one of the largest districts in Europe in which examples of late-nineteenth-century architecture. Chemnitz has been appointed European Capital of Culture in 2025.
ECOC
The European Capital of Culture (ECOC) is a title awarded by the European Union each year in two other Member States to a city that dares to work on issues that play a role in many European cities and therewith showcases its cultural richness and diversity.
The ECOC process in Chemnitz started in 2015 with a multiannual and large-scale engagement and participation progress that resulted in a bidbook called C the Unseen.
The city was officially named the European Capital of Culture for 2025 on October 28th, 2020. This makes Chemnitz the fourth city in Germany, after Berlin, Weimar, and Essen for the Ruhr, to receive this prestigious title. The ECOC program provides a unique opportunity for Chemnitz to work with a focus on its maker communities on democratic issues. The work connects the city and the region with European citizens, artists, institutions and creators, exchanges cultural experiences and learns from each other, leading to making culture together and enjoyment and progress for many.

Who represents the city

She completed an internship at the European Parliament in Brussels and has collaborated with various cultural institutions such as Classical:NEXT, Bureauexport Berlin, Berlinale, Musikalische Komödie Leipzig, OMA Weimar and FOK Prague. Besides working for Medtronic and SAP in Prague, mainly she has been working as Production Manager for the physical theatre Farm in the Cave, the only residential company at DOX Centre for Contemporary Art. Since 2022 she is working for the Municipal Team for the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 as a project coordinator for International Affairs.

She contributed to the opening of the State Museum of Archeology SMAC and worked for 5 years at the Esche Museum, taking care of the textile-historical collection. She is currently working for the City of Chemnitz in the Cultural Management Office, which is focused on cultural funding and cultural strategy issues.
