Welcome to Burgos (180.000), a stately city located in the north of Spain
Welcome to Burgos (180.000), a stately city located in the north of Spain, with an exceptional artistic heritage that is full of history, stories, and legends, yet is also welcoming, inviting, and ideal for a stroll. Burgos has always been a major centre of human development, trade, and interaction. The region houses the oldest human remains in Europe at Atapuerca and is one of the most biodiverse habitats in Europe. Burgos is the cradle of Castilian (Spanish) and is a critical resting point along the Camino de Santiago.
Burgos has three Unesco world heritage sites, the Cathedral, the Camino de Santiago, and the Atapuerca archaeological sites.
Founded by Count Diego Porcelos in 884, Burgos has throughout history been the capital of Castilla, the place of residence and pantheon of kings, a centre of international trade, and a fundamental milestone on the Camino de Santiago, which undoubtedly has contributed to it being such a particularly hospitable city. Today, tradition and the avant-garde seamlessly merge in the city, and its many tourist attractions, headed by its Gothic Cathedral, include sites that have already become a global point of reference, such as the Museum of Human Evolution. Whatever the traveler’s interests, Burgos has a lot to see and many stories to tell. Here we only suggest a handful of unmissable visits, to whet your appetite. Due to its strategic location, Burgos has always had excellent transport links the northern and central parts of Spain and the eastern and western parts of Iberian Peninsula.
ECOC
Burgos ECoC 2031 will revolve its project around the motto ‘Renaissance’.
The motto reflects on the narrative of the medieval city that ventures beyond the city walls to embrace technical advances, culture and economic wealth, and european connections in the splendor of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The same city that has founded its development on industrial value and that now reflects on itself as a model of médium-size city, as a suitable scale for the European sustainable development, through the European Capital of Culture project and its desire to place culture as the axis of territorial development. The city of Burgos, after a process of reflection shared by different agents of the city, has designed the project narrative, from which to build the city project and the cultural project as a candidate city to become European Capital of Culture 2031.
Burgos ECoC 2031 is led by Sociedad Promueve Burgos, whose objective is to promote the city from its tourist, industrial, and cultural aspects, looking to establish channels of public-private cooperation for this purpose.
Currently, Promueve focuses on designing the project for Burgos to become the European Capital of Culture in 2031. To this end, it will establish the strategic lines to be developed, through a city and cultural narrative.
